WHAT IS SAFEGUARDING?
Safeguarding is an overarching term used to describe the protection of the health, wellbeing, and human rights of individuals. In the context of apprenticeships, safeguarding means protecting children and adults at risk from abuse and neglect, making sure that they are safe and that their health and development are not impaired.
Safeguarding Implementation
Designated Safeguarding Officer
Organizations should have a Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO) to ensure safeguarding procedures are in place and followed by all staff.
Training and Awareness
All staff should be trained to recognize signs of potential harm and know how to respond appropriately. Apprentices should also receive information on safeguarding during their induction.
Workplace Considerations
Employers are expected to take responsibility for an apprentice’s welfare in the workplace and seek appropriate advice if they suspect an apprentice may be at risk.
Why is safeguarding important in learning and working environments?
Safeguarding is important in both learning and working environments because it ensures the protection and well-being of individuals, allowing them to thrive in a safe and supportive atmosphere free from harm, abuse, and discrimination. This proactive approach fosters trust, promotes mental health, and enhances overall development.

How can apprentices refer their concerns?
Contacting the Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO). Training providers and educational institutions should have a DSO responsible for handling safeguarding issues. Apprentices should be informed about who their DSO is and how to contact them.
